  • Royal Wahingdoh ride on Lalnunpuia’s double strike

September 16: Striker Lalnunpuia scored two goals to help Royal Wahingdoh FC annihilate Vasco SC 4-2 in their last league tie of the 34th Federation Cup at the JRD Tata Sports Complex, Jamshedpur on Sunday. Going into halftime with a solid 3-0 lead, Royal Wahingdoh clearly had a firm grip on the match and looked to be headed for a comprehensive victory over their rivals. The win, however, was insignificant in terms of qualification as Kalighat MS SC had already registered wins against both sides to secure a place in the final round of the tournament.

One of the most recent signings of the season, Lalnunpuia was effective in penetrating experienced Vasco side’s defence and placed his team in front by scoring two early goals. The former Pailan Arrows striker scored his first goal in the 17th minute before following it up with a header in the 19th. The Royals then secured a third goal after Jackichand Singh headed in a Bekay cross in the 29th minute to take the Royals into half time with a three goal lead.
Vasco’s first goal came in the 57th minute off Jose Colaco to give the Goan side a glimmer of hope. However, Royal Wahingdoh’s Ennio scored the fourth goal after being sent a through ball by Mawia in the 60th minute. The attacking midfielder from Brazil fired a shot that took a slight deflection off a defender before finding the goal. The scores were marginally reduced in the 87th minute when M Mascarenhes braced Vasco’s second goal.
